Elena Vargas, a 28-year-old printmaker based in Portland, Oregon, has gained attention for her new series that reintroduces acid-free etching processes. Traditional etching relies on nitric or hydrochloric acids, which pose health and environmental risks. Vargas instead employs ferric chloride solutions combined with zinc plates treated through controlled electrolysis, eliminating hazardous fumes while preserving fine line detail.
Technical refinements in modern etching
Vargas studied classical intaglio at the Rhode Island School of Design before shifting focus to safer chemistry. Her method begins with a beeswax and resin ground applied to 16-gauge zinc plates. Exposure occurs under ultraviolet light through hand-drawn acetate positives rather than photographic film. Development uses a heated ferric chloride bath maintained at 38 degrees Celsius for 12 to 18 minutes, depending on desired depth. Plates are then neutralized in a sodium carbonate solution and rinsed in distilled water. This sequence removes the need for strong acids yet achieves comparable tonal range to historical plates.
She sources all materials from domestic suppliers to reduce carbon footprint. Ink is mixed from linseed oil and pigment without petroleum solvents. Printing takes place on a manual press using 300-gram cotton rag paper that requires no chemical sizing. Each edition is limited to 25 impressions, with three artist proofs reserved for archival documentation.
Themes explored in the current series
The series, titled “Quiet Ground,” comprises twelve plates depicting eroded coastal rock formations observed during Vargas’s residency on the Oregon coast last year. Subtle aquatint textures suggest tidal sediment layers without relying on spray or sugar-lift techniques that often involve toxic resists. Viewers note the absence of harsh contrast typical in acid-etched work; instead, mid-tones dominate, reflecting the muted palette of Pacific Northwest shorelines.
Exhibitions are scheduled at three regional galleries through next spring. Institutions including the Portland Art Museum have acquired two plates for their print study collection. Vargas plans to publish a technical manual later this year detailing bath chemistry ratios and plate preparation steps for other artists seeking to adopt similar practices. Her approach demonstrates that traditional craftsmanship can adapt to contemporary safety standards without sacrificing aesthetic quality.
